Richard Ruffino, responsible for the management of all architecture, engineering, equipment, scheduling and budget, on the project status: “We are 88 percent complete. Production will start from the new Miami Herald Media Company (MHMC) headquarters on schedule in May 2013. All three Goss Headliner double wide presses have been dis-assembled, match marked, electrically labeled, transported, rigged and reassembled in Doral.”

As planned, all the presses have been upgraded to the new Goss Meridian press control system, the most up-to-date software for these presses, old parts have been replaced where needed. The installation work was executed by a combined Goss/AIS (www.ais-york.com) team. The first press is printing, the second will start in a few weeks and the third press will start up in July. Fourteen print couples will be added for additional colour capacity.

According to Ruffino, the biggest challenge has been “building the facilities under a very fast timeline while extracting three presses from an operating printing facility without compromising the quality and performance of the existing operations, systems and employees.” Part of the installations are five fully overhauled TTR conveyor systems, supplied by Ferag and equipped with new forwarding and delivery stations.

“We have a very strong team here at the Miami Herald that are all contributing to this success,” Ruffino says. “We are on time and on budget of which we are very proud.”
