Advertisement charging a cellphone

Nice idea for an advert for Nivea sun care products: A solar panel integrated into a printed magazine ad allows to use the sun not only for tanning, but also for charging your mobile phone.

This is innovative advertising and it shows the power of print! The ad, which ran in the Brazilian magazine Veja Rio, includes a wafer-thin solar panel and a phone plug for charging.

What might appear as a marketing gimmick is not far from reality. The Technical University in Chemnitz, Germany, presented a technology to print solar cells on paper already in 2011 The technology is called 3PV (printed paper photo voltaics) and uses a normal print process to apply special ink with electrical properties to paper. Electricity is generated when the paper is exposed to light.

A video shows the device in action.
