WAN-IFRA condemns threats against media outlets in Mexico by criminal groups

2021-08-10. A journalist and several national media outlets were threatened in a video posted on social media by self-styled members of the Jalisco Cartel New Generation criminal group, following the journalists’ coverage in Michoacán, Mexico.

In a video posted on Twitter on Monday 9 August, armed men explicitly threaten Milenio and journalist Azucena Uresti. In a second message, the newspaper El Universal and the television station Televisa are also threatened.

In condemnation of these events, the World Association of News Publishers, WAN-IFRA, joined a statement published jointly with several media and press organisations such as the Organización Editorial Mexicana, El Heraldo de México, Milenio, El Universal, Televisa, Animal Político, TV Azteca, Debate, Publimetro, the Inter American Press Association, El Economista, and several others.
