WAN-IFRA’s momentum in Latin America and Spain: new members, advisory and coaching curriculum

2022-03-17. 2022 will be a pivotal year for the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Latin America and Spain through expanded consultancy portfolio, membership expansion and return to face-to-face conferences.

Six Spanish-speaking news organisations joined the WAN-IFRA’s in the past six months. In the same period, new consulting projects and coaching programmes were confirmed in Latin America and Spain. The World Media Congress will be held in Zaragoza, Spain, on 28-30 September and WAN-IFRA’s prestigious annual regional conference, Digital Media LATAM, will return to Mexico with an in-person format in the last quarter of 2022.

Consolidation of consultancy services

WAN-IFRA has provided digital media consulting services for more than two decades globally. However, only in 2019 did WAN-IFRA’s Latin American operation start offering this service.

Clients include media groups, magazines, digital portals, radio stations, and national and regional newspapers, such as El Heraldo de México and Revista Proceso in Mexico; Dínamo in Chile and Revista Fórum in Brazil, among others.

WAN-IFRA’s 360º consulting services are tailor-made for each client and include intensive monitoring based on industry best practices and four workstreams with specific goals:

  • Editorial improvements focused on audience growth
  • Analysis of existing technology and recommendations for performance improvements and resource optimisation.
  • Review of organisational structure and training of editorial and commercial staff.
  • Monetisation-oriented strategies and implementations (programmatic advertising and reader revenue)

New WAN-IFRA members in Argentina, Spain, Mexico and Uruguay

The year 2022 also began with a boost of membership. La Voz de Almería, Diari de Tarragona and EFE joined WAN-IFRA in Spain, followed with the Mexican marketing agency Medios Masivos Masivos Mexicanos, the Uruguayan newspaper la diaria and Grupo Atlántida of Argentina.

Agencia EFE, the public multimedia news agency, ranks fourth in the world and first in Spanish, with a worldwide network of more than three thousand journalists of 60 nationalities in 180 cities in 120 countries and with three editing desks in Madrid, Bogota and Bangkok. EFE provides an essential public service and distributes 3 million news items a year in different formats such as text, photography, audio, video and multimedia, which reach more than two thousand media outlets around the world daily.

Medios Masivos Mexicanos represents print, digital, billboard and radio media throughout Mexico. The media portfolio includes more than 120 newspapers throughout Mexico, 130 digital sites, and more than 200 OOH locations and 15 local radio and TV stations.

la diaria, the second-largest media with national circulation in Uruguay, has a robust subscription model supported by its printed daily, its digital platform, a narrative journalism magazine (“Lento”), a children’s publication (“Gigantes”), and the local edition of the international monthly “Le Monde Diplomatique”.

Grupo Atlántid has been a prominent player in Argentinian culture for more than a hundred years. It’s ranked at the top of the Comscore ranking in the entertainment category for Argentina, betting on new exclusive digital productions in each of its brands: Gente, Para ti, Paparazzi, Billiken and Puro Diseño.

Return from face-to-face conferences in Spain and Mexico

After two years, the WAN-IFRA conferences are back face-to-face, with events planned in Spain and Mexico.

From 17-19 May, LATAM Media Leaders eSummit in virtual format.

28-30 September: 73rd World News Media Congress, in Zaragoza, Spain.

28-30 November: Digital Media LATAM 2022, Mexico (venue to be confirmed).
