Background
News organizations in Europe face growing challenges in managing data responsibly, ensuring privacy, and maintaining compliance with regulations such as the GDPR. A dedicated media data space will provide a secure, transparent, and interoperable environment that supports innovation while safeguarding the rights of audiences.
The Alliance
The initiative unites publishers, research institutions, technology providers, and governance bodies to:
- Develop a secure and trusted framework for media data exchange.
- Create interoperability standards that allow collaboration across systems and borders.
- Ensure compliance with European regulations and protection of audience rights.
- Enable innovation through new, data-driven services and use cases.
WAN-IFRA’s Role
WAN-IFRA contributes to the project by:
- Facilitating collaboration among European publishers.
- Sharing best practices for ethical and transparent data use.
- Advocating for frameworks that support innovation and trust in journalism.
- Supporting pilot projects that explore practical applications of the media data space.
Benefits for the Media Ecosystem
- For publishers: better audience insights, secure collaboration opportunities, and enhanced competitiveness while maintaining control over data.
- For audiences: stronger guarantees of privacy, transparency, and trustworthy media.
- For the wider ecosystem: more resilient and innovative European media, strengthened by cross-border cooperation.
Next Steps
In the coming months, the alliance will design technical blueprints, establish governance models, and launch pilot projects. WAN-IFRA will actively involve its members in shaping and testing the data space.
