Josef Schiessl

Managing director of the Süddeutsche Zeitung printing plant, Germany

Josef Schiessl is the managing director of the Süddeutsche Zeitung printing plant in Munich. In addition to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, this factory also produces several of Germany’s national daily newspapers, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Handelsblatt, Die Welt and various editions of BILD. As the industry changes, enormous efforts are being made to increase efficiency and reduce costs while maintaining a very high level of quality.

For this reason, Mr. Schiessl has set up a constantly working laboratory. There, his employees regularly test production materials such as paper, ink and various types of chemicals. The methods used in this laboratory are used not only for cold-set printing technology, but also for heat-set technology and are even offered as a service to other publishers and printing companies. Mr. Schiessl is looking to industries outside the printing industry, for example the automotive industry. Automation, standardization, intensive PMO and agile development methods are just some of the keywords of his modernization program.

With his expertise, Mr. Schiessl heads a specialized unit that was set up specifically to manage complex and highly strategic projects for the entire group of companies. As an example, Josef Schiessl and his unit are developing the group’s sustainability strategy and ESG reporting.”

Mr. Schiessl is one of the panelists for the German Discussion and Panel: “How will technology change the industry?” at World Printers Summit 2024. Do not miss out – register for the Summit!
