Lars Adrian Giske is the Head of AI at the Norwegian newsroom iTromsø, one of five regional AI labs within Polaris Media.
Giske led the development of Djinn (Data Journalism Interface for Newsgathering and Notifications), a groundbreaking AI solution for sourcing possible news stories in large amounts of public data. The project started in April 2023. Today, 38 newspapers across Norway use Djinn.
He also headed the technical development of Democracy Base, a collaboration between the Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Bergen (UiB) and the newsrooms Bergens Tidende, iTromsø, and Framtid i Nord. Modelled on Djinn, the project aims to leverage machine learning and AI to help journalists keep abreast of political developments and increase transparency in local democratic processes.
Giske is currently helping design and develop Polaris Media’s editorial data platform while working on AI implementation in investigative workflows at iTromsø. Over the last couple of years, iTromsø and Giske have won several journalism awards for their efforts in data-driven and AI-powered journalism, among them the prestigious Norwegian Data Scoop Award twice in a row.
Giske has a background in philosophy and a keen interest in the intersections where science, technology, and ideas meet. After more than ten years as a journalist, editor, product owner, and editorial developer, he is well-versed in investigative and data-driven journalism, as well as hands on AI development and system design.
