BUILDING TRUST: HOW TO CONNECT WITH AND INVEST IN THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS

The Aga Khan University, Campus 3rd Parklands Avenue, opp the Aga Khan University Hospital Auditorium Room on the Ground Floor

In the increasingly automated and fragmented information landscape, trust stands as the news media’s  most vital asset. Grasping the dynamics of trust during these times of change is essential for our business model and the social role we aim to uphold. Investing in trust can be a key to unlocking user revenue.

Building trust in media is particularly important for the younger generation, who are exposed to numerous digital channels and often struggle to distinguish between reliable information and disinformation. They are more vulnerable to being misled, making the establishment of trustworthy media sources crucial.

Format and Distribution: Taking Inspiration from The Continent's Playbook

The Continent is a weekly publication covering news from Africa. When it was created four years ago, its founders paid particular attention to the readability and elegant design of the ePaper – it averages 30 pages and a news page has no more than 300 words on it. Their greatest innovation lies in mixing this with its distribution method, which mainly uses messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. The Continent readership includes a higher proportion of young adults than traditional news media. According to its last annual readers survey, this method of distribution on WhatsApp and other encrypted chat platforms is much appreciated for its ease of sharing quality content (in channels renowned for circulating false information).
