Sandy Romualdez

Ms. Alexandra “Sandy” P. Romualdez is the Chairperson of the Inquirer Group of Companies (IGC).  She currently oversees strategic planning and provides management direction to IG companies, namely the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inquirer.net, Megamobile and Inquirer Academy.

Prior to her appointment as Chairperson, she was the Group Chief Executive Officer of IGC for 25 years.   She was also the President and CEO of the Philippine Daily Inquirer .  As President and CEO, Sandy was instrumental to the Inquirer’s growth as the Philippines’ number one broadsheet.  She was responsible for corporate strategic planning, management development, succession planning, performance management, organizational design, corporate policy-making and organizational development.  She also played a key role in network building particularly with regard to the business community and non-government sector.

James Chessell was appointed Nine’s Managing Director, Publishing in 2021 with responsibility for The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAToday.

He formerly worked on the editorial side of the Publishing business where he was Group Executive Editor – Australian Metro Publishing for three-and-a-half years and National Editor of The Herald and The Age with responsibility for federal politics, business and world coverage.

James is a Walkley Award-winning journalist who began his career as a reporter at The Age before working at The Herald, The Australian and The Financial Review where his roles included Business Editor and Europe Correspondent.

Kirsten Eddy

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

Kirsten Eddy is a postdoctoral research fellow and co-author of the Digital News Report at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, a senior researcher with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and a research affiliate with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life. She is the co-author of two books: “Power in Ideas” (Cambridge University Press, 2021) and “Recoding the Boys’ Club” (Oxford University Press, 2020). Before returning to academia, she worked as an editor at Gallup as well as in roles in news editing and reporting.

Kirsten will present new insights about digital news consumption from the 2022 Digital News Report, with a particular focus on findings relevant for Digital Media Asia participants.

Ahmed Assar

Video Editor for Asia, Reuters

Ahmed Assar is the Reuters Video Editor for Asia and is based in Singapore. His journey with Reuters started in Cairo as a television producer in 1994 and has been responsible for covering everything from conflicts to peace talks to archaeological discoveries. During his time in the middle east he covered Turkey’s battle with the Kurds, the Balkans war, the Iraq war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A few months before the September 11, 2001 attacks, Ahmed moved to Dubai to establish Reuters Television’s first office in the Gulf region. Later in 2006, Ahmed moved to Singapore to head the Asia TV desk, and he also led the global TV team covering the Beijing Olympics. Ahmed became Asia Video Editor in 2014 and has since anchored several major stories across the region and beyond, including the disappearance and search of MH370, the Arab Spring in Egypt and Libya, the Trump-Kim Summits, the coronavirus pandemic and the Myanmar coup, to name a few.

Currently serving as the Head of Social (Public Affairs) for the Philippines’ most-trusted news outlet (Reuters’ Data News Report, June 2021), Aileen leads a team of online content producers who transformed GMA News and Public Affairs into a social media powerhouse with hundreds of millions of fans across popular social platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter.

Under her watch, GMA Public Affairs emerged as among the Top 10 online video publishers in the world under the News and Politics category, outpacing other global news leaders and international mainstream titles.

Aileen has a proven track record in growing social communities, crafting compelling stories tailored for different media channels, and designing data-backed business development strategies. She led the online campaign that made GMA News’ and GMA Public Affairs’ official YouTube accounts hit the 10 million subscribers mark in 2020 and 2021. This recognition also made GMA Network the first television station to have triple diamond creator awards in the Philippines, and second in Southeast Asia.

Amee Enriquez

Amee works with news publishers to optimize their business on Meta’s platforms. She also leads news training initiatives in APAC. She spent more than a decade working as a journalist for various award-winning news organizations, including the BBC, Channel News Asia and the Jakarta Globe. Her interests lie in product innovation, video and new content formats.

Ard Boer

Senior Product Owner, Mediahuis Noord

Ard is Senior Product Owner at Mediahuis Noord with over 15 years experience in media. He started out as a concept developer in music industry when it was about to go under due to piracy and lack of physical sales. A decade later music industry is thriving due to the succes of paid streaming services. He developed things like a hitprediction tool with AI technology, social media charts and radio broadcast monitoring based on fingerprint recognition.

Since a few years he is working in the newspaper business. There are a lot of similiarities between printed media and the music industry of a decade ago. In this enviroment Ard is looking for new ways to produce, distribute and monetize content where in all these years people are actually consuming more of instead of less.

Ard focusses on using new technologies such as AI to improve the impact of Mediahuis Noord on their readership. Journalists should do the complicated work, AI can take care of the more easy stuff like football matchreporting. By using crowdsourced content like images, goalscorer information and coach quotes these articles can turn out to be very engaging while being very cost-efficient to generate.

Bettina Widmer

Bettina has worked in the media industry for six years in positions in editorial, social media and more. Since two years, she is Head of Vertical Hub at Blick Group. The team creates products and channels, that address new audiences and create innovative advertising environments. The Vertical Hub serves as an interface between newsroom, customers, and users. In 2021, Bettina was awarded the 30 Under 30 Award by International News Media Association INMA.

Mike Katayama

Tim heads up Piano’s fast-growing operations across the APAC region and has worked in and around the digital media business for 20 years. He began his career as a business journalist in the UK contributing to titles such as Management Today, Campaign and Marketing and then moved into the technology/product side of the journalism business for The Telegraph where he led product development, oversaw a number of major website relaunches and led data analysis for the MPs Expenses investigation.

Tim has spent the last 10 years advising media businesses on their subscription and identity management initiatives and joined Piano 4 years ago to run their UK operations, working with Piano clients including The Economist, The Telegraph, The Independent, DMG Media, Tortoise Media, Motorsport, JPIMedia, Newsquest and The Spectator.

Tim has recently moved to Singapore and has an MBA from Imperial College Business School, London.

Uni has spent almost 32 years as a journalist, leading  print and broadcast newsrooms, covering various issues and international events. These include Climate Conferences, APEC, G20, UN-GA, member of Interfaith and Intermedia Dialogue delegates from Indonesia. She also regularly teaches in Indonesia Journalism  School which was founded by Indonesia Journalist  Association (PWI), since 2011. She also lectures in journalism workshops in the ASEAN region. She was previously in charge of Rappler  Indonesia as Managing Director from 2013. She left in December 2017 to join IDN Times which targets millennials and Gen Zs, as Editor-in-Chief. She is the Chair of Indonesia Forum of Women Journalist since November 2018.
