Retired Executive Editor, The Washington Post, USA

Martin (Marty) Baron retired at the end of February 2021, after eight-plus years as executive editor of The Washington Post. News staffs under his leadership have won 18 Pulitzer Prizes. The Post won 11 Pulitzers for coverage during his tenure that included the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and investigations of the National Security Agency and the presidential campaign of Donald Trump.

First Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland

Roman Imielski is the First Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Poland’s leading news brand, Gazeta Wyborcza.

He is a former editorial secretary, foreign and political editor of Gazeta Wyborcza and editor-in-chief of the Wyborcza.pl website. He is the author of numerous articles on Polish politics, Russia, Ukraine, the European Union and transatlantic relations. He is a commentator on international and Polish affairs in electronic media.

Upasna Gautam

Senior Product Manager, Digital News Platforms, CNN, USA

Upasna is a Senior Product Management leader on the Digital News Platforms team at CNN, where she develops and optimizes the content management technology that delivers breaking news to the world.

Upasna has been working in the tech industry for the last 15 years and has been an integral part of delivering technical, data-informed solutions for brands such as Ford Motor Company, Valvoline, PCMag, Mashable, Mars Corporation, and Kimberly-Clark.

Monicah Waceke Ndung’u

Chief Corporate Affairs and Partnerships Officer, Nation Media Group, Kenya

Ms. Monicah Waceke Ndung’u, is currently the Chief Corporate Affairs and Partnerships Officer at Nation Media Group (NMG), overseeing Strategy, Corporate Affairs, Marketing and Partnerships, in an earlier stint she also handled the Broadcasting division at NMG. Prior to joining NMG, she was the General Manager for Kwese Free TV Kenya Limited and also worked with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and Uganda Broadcasting Corporation in overall channel management programming, partnership building, change management and product development.

Dr. Rainer Esser

Dr. Rainer Esser

Dr. Rainer Esser studied law in Munich, Geneva and London. He continued his studies in the United States with a Master of Law at the University of Georgia before receiving his final degree in 1986. After graduating from the German School of Journalism (Deutsche Journalistenschule) in Munich, he worked as a lawyer for various law firms. Since 1989 he also holds a PhD in International Law of the University of Regensburg. From 1989 -92 he served as Editor in Chief at Bertelsmann International in Munich and eventually joined Munich-based Spotlight Publishing House (Spotlight, écoute, ECOS and ADESSO) as Managing Director. After serving as Managing Director of Main-Post Publishing House in Würzburg in the late nineties he started his current position as CEO of DIE ZEIT in 1999. In 2011, he also took on the role as Managing Director of DvH Medien GmbH.

Bartosz Wieliński has been deputy editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza since 2019. He has worked at the paper since joining as a 20 year old intern in 1998.He is a former Wyborcza Germany correspondent – a country he enjoys covering, especially its history. He has published two books: “Bad Germans” and “Hitler’s War of the Doctors.”

He worked as the Head of Digital, Transformation and Platforms at the EBU, The European Broadcasting Union and before that was head of an innovation lab and journalist at VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster.

Hannah Sarney is the Editorial Product Director at the Financial Times. She champions newsroom innovation and audience-focused strategies by bridging editorial, data, product, and technology teams. She founded the FT’s Next Generation Board and the programme continues to partner emerging leaders with the FT Group Management Board each year to bring fresh perspectives to business challenges. Zach Seward is the editorial director of artificial-intelligence initiatives at The New York Times. He leads a newsroom team responsible for experimenting with uses of generative AI and other machine-learning techniques. Before joining The Times, he was a co-founder of Quartz, the global business news organization that he led in a variety of roles for more than a decade, including as CEO, editor-in-chief, and chief product officer. Manfred Kluge has been one of the leading figures in the German media agency landscape for over 35 years.     Adriaan Basson

    Adriaan Basson is editor-in-chief of News24, South Africa’s largest news website, and the author of five books on corruption and current affairs. He is the recipient of multiple awards for investigative journalism, including the CNN African Journalist of the Year for news and the Taco Kuiper award. Having started his career at Beeld in 2003, Basson worked as an investigative journalist on the Mail & Guardian, where he was a founding member of amaBhungane, before moving to City Press as assistant editor.     Vibeke Fürst Haugen

    Director General, NRK, Norway

    Vibeke Fürst Haugen became the first female Director General of Norway’s public broadcaster, NRK, in April 2022.

    Her career at NRK began in 1995 as a program creator and producer, with a decade spent in the youth and children’s department, culminating as Head of Department. She later focused on organizational development and innovative content creation before becoming Senior Vice President of the Content Division in 2013, overseeing diverse programming at NRK’s Oslo headquarters.

He previously was Senior Director of Audience at The Washington Post, where he spent 11 years building international digital readership and the subscription businesses.

    Jane Barrett is the Head of AI Strategy at Reuters, working to enhance journalism responsibly with AI. She works closely with data scientists to explore and develop AI solutions; Product and Engineering to integrate AI into workflow and tools; and Editorial and Legal to ensure journalistic standards and ethics are maintained in an AI world.

    Bartosz Hojka

    Bartosz Hojka

    For the past 10 years, Bartosz Hojka has served as the President of the Management Board of Agora Group. During his tenure, the company became the fourth-largest media group in Poland. Under his leadership, Agora solidified its position as the market leader in cinema (Helios) and outdoor advertising (AMS), and successfully expanded into film production and distribution through Next Film. He also oversaw the merger of Agora Radio Group and Eurozet, facilitating significant growth in the radio segment.

    Joel Simon is the founding director of the Journalism Protection Initiative. Simon began his career as a journalist in Latin America, before joining the Committee to Protect Journalists in 1998. He served as CPJ executive director from 2006 to 2021. In 2022 Simon was a Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, and also Senior Research Fellow at Knight First Amendment Institute, also at Columbia.
