Young Media Leaders Fellowship
Background
The Young Media Leadership Fellowship programme was launched in 2020, in partnership with Temasek Foundation, in response to a critical need identified by members of the World Editors Forum Asia Chapter to cultivate the next generation of media leaders.
Building Future Media Leaders
From 2020 to 2022, the programme was held yearly across the APAC region with the aim of discovering and nurturing future Asian media leaders. These efforts have not only enhanced the skills of promising journalists but also equipped editors with the expertise needed to navigate complex media landscapes. The impact has been tangible, with several participants taking on more responsibilities within their organisations.
Adapting to Industry Challenges
In its first years, the programme emphasised self-examination and personal leadership styles. In 2024, the programme will shift its focus towards understanding and responding to the evolving challenges within the media industry. This updated approach aims to foster adaptability and agility among Fellows, preparing them to lead effectively amidst rapid change and societal uncertainties.
YMLF 2022 has unleashed something in my potential that I know of, but not fully aware of previously.
By far the most valuable part of the experience was having the chance to connect with fellow journalists and editors from across the region; to realise the many common challenges that we face and journeys that we are making, while learning about our different approaches and experiences.
The masterclass really helped us young media leaders in coming up with sound decisions to guide our team navigate the changing media landscape. Some of the key takeaways from the sessions are how to be a more self-aware leader; the importance of getting all players involved in newsroom innovations; and new initiatives on how to stay relevant in serving the community better through responsible journalism.
