WAN-IFRA_Colorimetic_Tolerances
It is now available (in the English language) from the Beuth publishing company (www.beuth.de) that publishes all the standards on behalf of the German DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standards organisation. The specifications of the revised ISO/DIS 12647-3:2004 [3] standard entered into force on 1st July 2004 in accordance with a joint directive of the associations bvdm, ZMG and Ifra. It is now a matter of putting them into practice. Training courses, events and series of articles in trade magazines focus on this. Standard colour profiles based on the new standard are available for downloading from the Ifra web site: www.ifra.com.
The new, revised standard is being applied also in several other countries. This gives rise to a number of practical questions which will be dealt with in this Special Report.
What is the relationship between the density and colour coordinates of primary colours? How much can the density vary within the framework of the specified colours? ISO/ DIS 12647-3:2004 is the very first standard to deal with the colour sequence. What influence does the colour sequence have on obtaining the required colour values? What influence do tonal value fluctuations during printing have on the colour result? It is this latter question that concerns printers who set their systems to the new general guideline of 26 percent dot gain (or 30 percent in North America respectively).
