New tech websites launched

After the separation from its longtime partner AllThingsD, the popular technology blog, The Wall Street Journal has launched WSJD, as their new tech news hub. For their part, former AllThingsD partners Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg have started a new media company and a website called Re/code.

Croydon Citizen website launches print magazine

Just one year after the launch of their online title, The Croydon Citizen in the U.K. has launched a print version. The concept is somewhat unique in that it is a news magazine written by citizens for citizens … and (partly) funded by citizens!

Music website launches complementary print magazine

Despite the overtly digital landscape, some publishers have seen fit to launch print extensions of their online content. For example, as we reported earlier this week, technology and business website Tech City News recently started a print publication.

Freedom Communications to launch LA Register in 2014

Aaron Kushner, the CEO of Freedom Communications, told the Orange County Register last week that he will launch a new daily, called the Los Angeles Register in early 2014. The California-based company also owns the Beach Register and three other print daily newspapers as well as several non-dailies.

Guardian starts long-form journalism print project

The Guardian is experimenting with long-form journalism. While the web service “long reads of the week” was stopped in 2012, the concept is being revived as a weekly print product called “the long good read.” Jemima Kiss, head of technology for the Guardian, and developer Dan Catt explain the concept.

The Committee to Protect Journalists released its annual census this week finding that 2013 was the second worst year on record for reporters in prison; and for the second consecutive year Turkey was the world’s top press jailer.

Tech City News starts print edition

The Tech City News website, which is dedicated to business and technology, has taken “a giant leap forwards” by lauching a quarterly print magazine. “Paper is the new second screen,” says Editor Alex Wood, who invites the readers who are overrun by an avalanche of tweets and emails, scanning tons of news every day to “unplug, sit back and relax.”
