The web page as a unit of content is on its way to extinction, contends Jack Marshall, staff writer at Digiday. He might be exaggerating somewhat, but there does seem to be a trend toward streams of content and away from discrete pages.

On 2 January, The New York Times announced plans for major design changes to its website, NYTimes.com, effective Wednesday, 8 January. A small number of readers would immediately begin seeing previews of the new designs, the company said.

New tech websites launched

After the separation from its longtime partner AllThingsD, the popular technology blog, The Wall Street Journal has launched WSJD, as their new tech news hub. For their part, former AllThingsD partners Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg have started a new media company and a website called Re/code.

Croydon Citizen website launches print magazine

Just one year after the launch of their online title, The Croydon Citizen in the U.K. has launched a print version. The concept is somewhat unique in that it is a news magazine written by citizens for citizens … and (partly) funded by citizens!

Music website launches complementary print magazine

Freedom Communications to launch LA Register in 2014

Aaron Kushner, the CEO of Freedom Communications, told the Orange County Register last week that he will launch a new daily, called the Los Angeles Register in early 2014. The California-based company also owns the Beach Register and three other print daily newspapers as well as several non-dailies.

Guardian starts long-form journalism print project

The Guardian is experimenting with long-form journalism. While the web service “long reads of the week” was stopped in 2012, the concept is being revived as a weekly print product called “the long good read.” Jemima Kiss, head of technology for the Guardian, and developer Dan Catt explain the concept.
