Anna Bateson

Chief Executive Officer, Guardian Media Group, UK

Anna Bateson is chief executive of Guardian Media Group, rejoining the Guardian in 2022 from her previous role as CEO of Josh Wood Colour. Prior to becoming CEO, Anna spent four years as the Guardian’s chief customer officer (CCO), and in 2019 as interim CEO. In her time as the Guardian’s CCO, Anna played a vital part in developing a unique reader revenue model which now sees over one million paying supporters from around the world who contribute financially to the Guardian. In her previous and current leadership role at the Guardian Anna has consistently championed the Guardian’s purpose in every aspect of our work. In 2019, she advocated for the Guardian’s accreditation as a B Corp and was part of the team that launched the first environmental pledge to readers. In 2020, she drove the decision to no longer accept fossil fuels advertising, which in 2023 was also extended to include a ban on gambling ads. In 2023, GMG embarked on a new three-year strategy, spearheaded by Anna and the Guardian’s editor-in-chief Katharine Viner, to further build the Guardian’s position as one of the world’s leading quality news publishers — becoming more global, more digital, with more paying supporters and producing more world-class journalism.
