Emma Clark

News Editor for Afghanistan and Pakistan AFP, Afghanistan

Emma Clark is AFP’s News Editor for Afghanistan and Pakistan, based in Islamabad since 2020. She coordinates multimedia coverage of breaking news, features and special reports on subjects including politics, economics and culture with a focus on women and environment. She has covered the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban and the subsequent imposition of their austere version of Islam, with AFP winning the Breaking News category of the 2023 Human Right Press Awards for a package on women’s rights in Afghanistan. She has also reported on the multiple unprecedented natural disasters in Pakistan. Previously, she has worked in Hong Kong, Paris and London.

Emma has witnessed first hand the challenges on reporting on women in deeply patriarchal countries where a fraction of journalists are women and the cultural sensitivities that must be respected when reporting out in the field. Overcoming the difficulties and improving storytelling that covers women’s lives is a central part of her role – from pitching and planning through to reporting and editing.
