As Asia Pacific editor based in Seoul, Soyoung Kim oversees Reuters coverage of the two Koreas, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, working with hundreds of journalists in the region since March 2022. From 2019-early 2022, Soyoung oversaw Reuters’ coverage of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, one of the most closely watched elections in history, and tumultuous U.S. politics in the aftermath of the contested vote and a Capitol riot on Jan. 6. From 2017 to 2019, she was Korea Bureau Chief, leading coverage of historic 2018 and 2019 summits between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un; the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. She oversaw U.S. corporate regulation coverage in Washington DC between 2015-2017 as U.S. Regulation Editor, after reporting and editing on M&A and corporate finance for five years in New York.

She was a U.S. autos correspondent based in Detroit during the 2008-2010 auto industry bankruptcy and restructuring and part of the team that won the SABEW award for breaking news on GM and Chrysler bankruptcies and the Reuters Journalist of the Year award. A graduate of Yonsei University, she joined Reuters in Seoul in 2005 to cover business and markets.
