Welcome to the 6th edition of WAN-IFRA's flagship Africa event!
Register Here! This session is dedicated to innovative editorial projects launched by publishers from Nigeria and South Africa. They have often required their editorial teams to carry out lengthy investigations, but also have needed to reflect on the most appropriate formats to deliver this critical information. Most important, is that the impact of their storytelling engages audiences beyond their usual ones. n this session, we will address how Stears will reinvent their election coverage in Nigeria for the 2023 election cycle and we will learn about the various audio and visual formats NEWS24 is currently using.
For most African publishers, advertising still dominates digital revenues. Where is the advertising market in 2022? Where do publishers need to focus? Is programmatic advertising on the rise and is there concern? In what other areas of digital advertising do publishers have control and can they make a difference?
Digital technologies have reproduced patterns of harassment and abuse against women journalists, and online harassment became a growing challenge. The growth of online harassment which became more systematic and coordinated is used to silence and intimidate women journalists, to keep them away from the online public space, which is not only a violation of gender rights, but a violation of freedom of expression as well.
Online harassment has indeed increased during the Covid-19 pandemic with the operational shift of businesses and personal interactions to the online sphere. This session will focus on all the challenges women journalists are facing online today, and will offer tips and tools they can use to manage and counter online abuse.
The conclusion of our session during the conference in 2021 was that we need to address young audiences on their preferred platforms, give them the floor above all and talk about what concerns them. The information in the news concerns them, but the way in which this information is transmitted by the mainstream media is too disconnected from the expectations of young audiences. Can you still engage young people in mainstream media and build brand loyalty? We’ll look at emerging trends and new storytelling initiatives, and of course at how they are embracing TikTok, Instagram & other social platforms.
Join us live for the virtual ceremony honoring the Winners of the 7th edition of the African Digital Media Awards.

The GNI Innovation Challenges empower news organisations from around the world that pioneer new thinking in online journalism, develop new paths to sustainability and better understand their communities. Since its launch in 2018, The Innovation Challenges have funded over 200 projects in 47 countries.
In this session, two past participants of the challenge, from Egypt and Nigeria, will present the progress of their projects and how, with very different models and goals, they bring innovation to the news media landscape.
You are a small, local or niche news publisher. How can you explore the potential benefits of AI technologies for your journalism and your business?
When we ran the idea of a session on how to apply for grants for one of your projects to our African media advisory committee, the feedback was: the question is more how to empower more people in our publishing companies to do that? How can people become better equipped to apply for grants to fund their ideas and projects? Additionally, how can they learn to manage the grants they receive as it often means following specific guidelines from the donors? In this session, we deep dive into those questions and more!
