Here’s how to support this year’s World News Day

The Canadian Journalism Foundation is calling on news organisations across the globe to join the World News Day campaign, taking place on May 2, with the goal of raising awareness about the value of fair and independent journalism.

Now in its second year, #WorldNewsDay, founded by CJF, celebrates the stories, the people, the reporting and the professional news organisations that are dedicated to changing lives, challenging the status quo, holding those in power to account and supporting freedom and democracy.

Around the world, truth is under attack, trust in the media is in decline, the business model is under increasing pressure, and the spread of misinformation has never been more pervasive — all threatening to undermine free press and a healthy democracy.

At a time when journalism is being rocked by so many disruptive forces, the goal is to unite newsrooms across the globe to join in a global campaign on May 2, the eve of World Press Freedom Day to celebrate and highlight the vital work that journalism does around the world.

Here are five ways news organisations can lend their support to World News Day:

  • Run a World News Day ad in your publication (The Canadian Journalism Foundation will provide the creative)
  • Share your stories of why #NewsMatters on #WorldNewsDay
  • Solicit an opinion piece from a source who has been impacted by journalism to run on World News Day – May 2, 2019
  • Devote an editorial to why #NewsMatters
  • Open your newsroom to the public
