The 2-month long (August-September 2020) career training for women journalists and editors will include sessions on career development, media management, and gender balance in content. With COVID-19 changing the way news organizations operate, the programme will help women journalists acquire new skills and build their capacity for more successful careers.

GNI APAC Subscriptions Lab Launches at WAN-IFRA Asian Media Leaders eSummit

2020-07-30. WAN-IFRA, FTI Consulting and Google announced the launch of the APAC GNI Subscriptions Lab at the WAN-IFRA Asian Media Leaders eSummit. The Lab is an intensive four-month programme to help eight different news publishers from the Asia-Pacific region strengthen digital subscriptions capabilities and grow reader revenue. WAN-IFRA announces Taiwan to host the World News Media Congress 2021 and reschedules Zaragoza to 2022

Due to continued uncertainties and travel constraints around the COVID-19 pandemic, WAN-IFRA is calling off the World News Media Congress, which was initially planned for Zaragoza, Spain, in September 2020. Meanwhile, it has named Taiwan as its venue for the 2021 Congress and rescheduled the 2022 Congress in Zaragoza.

World News Day 2020 sets ambitious global target

Highlighting journalism’s importance in an age of misinformation, the Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and the World Editors Forum (WEF) — with support from Google News Initiative — aim to have 100 media supporters from around the world, up from 40 last year, for World News Day 2020. The annual global event is to take place on Monday, September 28.

Suspicion of political interference against independent media in Bulgaria

2020-06-26. WAN-IFRA expresses its concerns over suspicions of political interference in the prosecution of Ivo Prokopiev, owner of the Economia Group in Bulgaria. The haste of the judicial authorities in a court case against Bulgarian media owner and businessman Ivo Prokopiev gives rise to fears of a new instance of political intimidation of the independent Bulgarian press. It sheds light, once again, on the steady erosion of independence and pluralism of Bulgaria’s media over the past fifteen years, and a disturbing lack of scrutiny on media issues from EU’s authorities.

WAN-IFRA’s Programme to support local journalism in Europe set to grow

2020-06-18. WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, is launching round two of Table Stakes Europe in partnership with the Google News Initiative. The one-year transformation and coaching programme for regional and local news publishers will welcome twenty-four participating news enterprises, growing from fourteen in the previous edition. The sessions will start in October 2020 and publishers are invited to apply now.

WAN-IFRA Condemns Guilty Verdict for Maria Ressa in Cyber-Libel Trial

2020-06-15. Prominent Filipino journalist Maria Ressa, and WAN-IFRA’s Golden Pen of Freedom laureate, has been found guilty of cyber libel in a case widely condemned as politically motivated. She has 15 days to appeal the decision but risks spending up to six years in prison.

27 women journalists from Egypt complete Women in News’ Media Management Training

13-06-2020. “The training exceeded my expectations. The diversity of trainers and sessions was very beneficial, and it helped us build a lot of capacity, mainly how to be leaders of a newsroom, not only managers,” says Hagar Gamil, Radio El Nil, one of the 27 women journalists from Egypt who completed the WAN-IFRA Women in News Leadership Accelerator Media Management Training this week.

World’s Press Condemns Violence Against Journalists in the US

2020-06-12. In an unprecedented show of international solidarity, WAN-IFRA members from over 40 countries have written to US President Donald Trump to denounce recent violence against journalists covering protests in the country. The joint letter calls for perpetrators to be brought to justice and urges President Trump “to forcefully condemn these attacks and show unwavering support for a free press.”

World Editors Forum and Temasek Foundation launch new Young Media Leaders Fellowship Programme to groom future media industry leaders

The new Young Media Leaders (YML) Fellowship Programme, an initiative of the World Editors Forum Asia Chapter, the regional network in Asia for editors within the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), and supported by Temasek Foundation, is launched today with its inaugural class of 30 Fellows. The fellowship programme seeks to nurture the next generation of media leaders who are committed to shaping the regional future.
