New Board Leaders Take Office at WAN-IFRA’s Annual Meeting

2020-09-22. WAN-IFRA is announcing today ten new members who will be serving on its Supervisory Board of Directors. They were elected the Association’s Annual General Assembly of Members held on Wednesday 16 September. Four new members will be serving on its Executive Board of Directors and twenty-five Board Members were also reappointed for a new term of office at the same meeting.

2020-09-16. The Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom award of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), has been awarded to Colombian journalist, Jineth Bedoya Lima. The award recognises “Ms Bedoya Lima’s dedication to the profession of journalism, her tireless work in promoting and protecting the rights of women, and her courage in confronting and overcoming her own personal tragedy with a level of dignity and determination that serves as an inspiration to peers the world over.”

2020-09-08. Today, WAN-IFRA Women in News names Mary Mbewe, Executive Editor of the Daily Nation in Zambia as the 2020 WIN Editorial Leadership Award Laureate for Africa. The announcement will be made at WAN-IFRA’s Digital Media Africa conference.

WAN-IFRA Women in News supports women journalists in Lebanon as part of the Social Impact Reporting Initiative in the Arab Region

Following the Beirut explosion on 4 August, 2020, WIN launched a special initiative as part of the Social Impact Reporting Initiative to support women journalists who are covering the aftermath of the blast. 12 journalists were selected to receive WIN’s support. By being part of this initiative, selected journalists will produce articles and stories to be published in Lebanese newspapers and websites, focusing on the social and cultural impact of the traumatic event.

WAN-IFRA Women in News Launches Study on Sexual Harassment in the Media Industry – Africa to be focus of first phase of study

Nairobi, Kenya – WAN-IFRA Women in News and City University of London are conducting a major research study into sexual harassment in the media workplace in select countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab Region and Southeast Asia. This study builds on research done in 2018 which identified a gap in available data on sexual harassment in media specifically in these regions.

The arrest of Apple Daily’s publisher is an assault against Hong Kong’s citizens’ freedoms

WAN-IFRA and the World Editors Forum have expressed grave concern over the arrest in Hong Kong on Monday of Jimmy Lai, the founder and publisher of Apple Daily, the continued detention of Hopewell Chin’ono, a Zimbabwean journalist and 2010 Nieman Fellow and the increased jail time for Al Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein in Egypt.
